Life Skills. Confidence. Self-Esteem. Pure Joy! Camp Winston exists for kids with complex neurological disorders who need highly specialized support to be successful at camp. Located on beautiful Sparrow Lake in the Muskoka region of Ontario, Camp Winston provides inspiriting recreation opportunities to children with exceptionalities. Camp Winston operates four, two-week session attended by a totally of 120 campers aged 6 – 17 years from across Canada. For many, this is the first time in their lives they feel welcomed and secure enough to participate without being rejected or alienated by their peers. Campers usually have a combination of neurological disorders which include: - Autism Spectrum Disorders
- Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder
- Tourette’s Disorder
- Learning Disabilities
- Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
- Oppositional Defiant Disorder
Campers are encouraged and supported as they participate – often for the first time – in various sports, swimming and other water skills, arts and crafts, theatre, challenge ropes course, nature studies and canoe trips. While having fun, they learn vital social and gross motor skills specific to their needs. Special retreats for parents, grandparents and siblings are also help year-round to teach families and caregivers behaviour management skills, coping strategies and more. Some camps offer integrated programs for children with neurological disorders. But these are not right for every child. Ours is the only summer camp in Ontario offering specialized programs and staff. Our counsellors and activity instructors are older and more experienced, and we have a high ratio of counsellors to campers which allow on-to-one support. The camp receives no government funding.
